How to experience Hindu, Jain, and Sikh holy sanctuaries with cultural respect, confidence, and comfort.
Ancient Sacred Traditions
India is a deeply spiritual land where ancient rituals continue uninterrupted. Visitors of all identities are warmly welcomed into temples, gurdwaras, and mosques provided basic customs are followed:
Practical Etiquette Guidelines
- Footwear: Always remove footwear outside temple gates. Clean cotton socks can be worn if marble stones feel hot under the midday sun.
- Shoulders & Knees: Both men and women should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Light linen trousers and shirts are ideal.
- Leather Rules: In traditional Jain shrines (such as Ranakpur) and Pushkar Brahma temple, leather items (belts, wallets) must be deposited outside.
- Head Coverings: In Sikh Gurdwaras (like the Golden Temple in Amritsar and Bangla Sahib in Delhi), covering your head with a scarf or bandana is mandatory for everyone.
Your private driver always provides advance briefings before you arrive at any shrine, ensuring you never feel uncertain.
